Eucomis is a genus of bulbous plants from South Africa. Their common name ‘Pineapple Lily’ refers to the tuft of leaves held on top of the flower spike, giving the appearance of a pineapple top. Eucomis comosa is a superb species, and numerous colourful cultivars are now in circulation, with 'Sparkling Burgundy' one of the best. The glossy burgundy strap leaves emerge in late spring or early summer followed by their remarkable flower. Even when not flowering, the foliage is worth a spot in the garden in its own right. A fantastic plant!
